From the 11th Century until the 1970s, Rothwell was the home to Rothwell Castle, where three Kings visited and which was owned by John of Gaunt. The fortified manor house fell into disrepair many times and was eventually torn down in the 1970s.

The First RUDC Election

 

The first Rothwell Urban District Council election took place in 1894 with many of the members of its predecessor, the Rothwell Local Board, sweeping seats. The Independents took 9, Labour candidates took 4 and the Liberal candidates took 2.

Rothwell Civic Building

Once home to the Rothwell Urban District Council, the 19th-century Civic Building has been abandoned since 2016 and has recently been sold for £364,000. The building is currently subject to a planning application to turn it into 9 flats.

Thorpe Hall

Joan de Carteret

Joan de Carteret was active in our local politics for decades, being the RUDC's last chairman and the LMDC's first mayor. However, she grew frustrated with politics and retired in 1975, only to lose her life a few months later in a tragic accident.

Roman Settlement

In 1977, evidence of human activity in the 2nd-4th century was found on what is now Rothwell Country Park. Amongst the Roman-era finds were a human skull, a rare yew tree bucket, and a shoe specially made for someone with a foot injury.
