In 1891, the population of Stourton had increased significantly and the Committee of St Andrew Mission procured land and enlisted an architect, Charles H. Fowler, to build a new church<ref name="RT 1891">(The Rothwell Times, 1891)</ref> to replace the existing building that was commonly known as the "iron mission".<ref>(The Rothwell Times, 1897b)</ref> The land on which the old building stood had been purchased by the Great Northern Railway to use for a new line through Stourton.<ref name="1898 RT" /> Donations for the new church came from Sister Katherine (£300; ~£31,950.30 in 2024), Joshua Tetley & Son (£100; ~£10,650.10 in 2024), W.H.
